The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company is a manufacturer of dipping tobacco , dry snuff , and one variant of chewing tobacco in the United States. It is headquartered in Nashville, TN and is known for its Copenhagen and Skoal brands.

History[]

The company's history dates back to 1822, when George Weyman, inventor of Copenhagen Snuff, opened a retail store in Pittsburgh, PA.

In 2001, while doing business as UST Inc., the Greenwich, CT-based company changed the name of its principal subsidiary, United States Tobacco Co. to U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co., to better reflect their image, as many consumers incorrectly thought the company manufactured cigarettes. The company had been known as the U.S. Tobacco Company since 1922.[1]

In 2009, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altria Group, based in Richmond, VA. Altria Group's other companies include cigarette manufacturer Philip Morris USA, cigar manufacturer John Middleton, luxury cigarette manufacturer Nat Sherman, and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.

In 2012, Altria Group launched an oral nicotine product called Verve.[2] It did not contain tobacco, nor did it dissolve like a nicotine lozenge, and it contained roughly 1.5mg of nicotine. It was launched in Virginia and retailed for around $3.[3] However, by the end of 2018, the Verve product was discontinued, along with e-vapor brands MarkTen and Green Smoke.[4] The product was reportedly available until February 2, 2019 in remaining retail locations in Colorado, Nevada, Florida, and Virginia.[5]
